The Superstars of Raw, SmackDown, and NXT all battle to be the ultimate survivors! For the 25th consecutive year, the Superstars of the WWE come together for Survivor Series. Its unique 5-on-5 elimination matches have always been favorites among WWE fans and this year will see some unique teams built and destroyed. The Dove Project - Modern Dance for Young People

When I was a younger lizard, I really wanted to be a dancer. That lasted for one lesson. Who knew my tail would become a lethal weapon??!! The teacher invited me to leave. (Don't ask about the time I tried figure skating. It wasn't pretty, but the hockey coach got a decided gleam in his eye.)

Ulysses Dove correographed some amazing modern dance. We're super lucky to have a performance of parts of his dance, Vespers, coming up.

It'll be at the West Las Vegas Library, on Thursday 11/3, at 1 pm.

The presentation is oriented toward young people, but if you're interested in dance, go anyway! The Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theater will be performing an excerpt from the the dance.

And Alfred Dove (Ulysses' brother) will actually be there, to answer questions!

Card making in Laughlin

About a month ago, Karen D, down in Laughlin, mentioned a totally cool sounding program. Mindy is making holiday cards from scratch! I couldn't attend, but Karen sent me some great pics and a video. This looks so amazing! I can't trek to Laughlin mid-week while school's in session, but Karen promised that Mindy would keep me updated. Here's the info about the program:

Reference Assistant Mindy Munro has been offering card craft classes once per month for adults at the Laughlin Library since January, 2011. Each month, a differently themed card is created. In the past, “Thank You”, “Valentine’s Day”, and the “ 4th of July” have been inspirations. The classes last for 1.5 hours. Advance sign-up is encouraged in order to make sure that we have enough materials for all attendees. Class size is usually 10-12 adults.

As you can see from the video (below), the room is PACKED! So give them a call to reserve a space. Their number is 507-4060.

Great Pumpkin Gathering and Contest!

I ***ADORE*** Halloween! I've loved it since I was a little lizard, and I love it more now! I don't trick-or-treat so much any more, but my friends throw the most incredible Halloween parties!

One of the things I love most is carving pumpkins - so you can guess how excited I was when I saw this:

I'm *SO* gonna bring in some Rocking Jack-o-Lanterns!

My buds at the library have made up a great list of Pumpkin Carving / Halloween Decorating books. (click on the book cover to see the whole list!)

I checked, and they really want you to do all your carving at home. Pumpkin guts make a terrific mess, and they're really bad for the books.

Bring in your carved pumpkins to the WINDMILL Library anytime between Tuesday October 25th, and Monday morning of Halloween. The judging will be in the afternoon.

And the best part is I don't have to take the pumpkin home to throw it away. The library is going to recycle all the pumpkins! Woo Hoo!

Marshmallow Towers

Erin at the Whitney Library has such GOOD ideas!

Don't tell anyone, but I have a sweet tooth, so this event was terrifically appealing to me!

Erin and The Gang made Marshmallow Towers last week! It was amazing!

The rules were we had to construct an amazing tower using only marshmallows, toothpicks, and our imagination.

Sometimes we had to taste -er, TEST the construction materials to be sure they were of the best quality!

Jonathan, Angel, Freddy, Chalyn, Clarissa and the rest of the gang made incredibly detailed towers. The towers all went home to be admired! (And probably to give their lives to upcoming mugs of hot chocolate!)

Erin has a couple more great events coming up - Movie Poster Mania is gonna happen on 10/22. We're going to create movie posters for teen books that SHOULD be made into movies.

And on November 12, we're going to do Project Runway. No, no sewing involved! We're going to create great wardrobes for dolls, using Duct Tape, Aluminum Foil, and other unusual materials.

I hope to see you there!

Did you know Zappos' headquarters is HERE? In the Las Vegas Valley?

Tomorrow night, Wednesday 10/12/2011, Zappos' "Speaker of the House*", Jamie Naughton, is going to be at the new Windmill Library, talking about the WOW that is Zappos!

Everything I've heard about Zappos is that they're weird and wonderful. Check out this video:

I *so* want to work there! I wonder if they'll need a Librarian in a few years?

Jamie's going to talk about how they manage both amazing customer service, AND making Zappos a great place to work! I love it when they say that at Zappos, "...happiness becomes the bottom line."

Brushbots!

What I want to know is HOW did I miss this? When Claire sent me the pictures, I was all, like, I want to do that too!

Claire, Patricia and Donovan made Brushbots (or BristleBots) out at the Centennial Hills Library. Basically, you chop the end off a toothbrush, add a small vibrating motor, and a battery. When you connect it all together, the Bot scoots all over, in unexpected directions!

Of course, there's more - but the best part is designing your bot. Starting with the toothbrush bristles, you can really bling up the little guy!

Claire promises me they'll be doing this program again! (Woo Hoo!)

And, at the end of November, Ginger is going to be doing a great self-portrait program. I can't draw to save my life, so I'm kind of afraid to see what I'll produce, but it sounds like fun!

Uncensored Voices

OK, the Banned Book event Tuesday evening was not what I was expecting. It was an uncomfortable evening all around, and I understand why my Lit teacher is giving extra credit for attending.

There was music playing when we came in to the theater. It was unusual, and I enjoyed it. I later found out it was from Listen to the Banned, a collection of banned or censored music from around the world.

Nevada Repertory Dance Theater started out the event with an eye-opening dance, performed to the words of a poem between two lovers. As the dance progressed, more and more clothing came off more and more of the dancers. There was never anything inappropriate, but... the dancing was suggestive.

At the end of the (really lovely, but blush-making) dance, a voice called out from the audience "Yep! That should have been censored!" Wow.

I enjoyed most of the books. But I don't think I'd ever read Tropic of Cancer. Kris Saknussemm read a passage that included most of the words that my Mom would never allow in the house, including one word that she strictly forbad me EVER to say anywhere.

Some of the readings were kind of boring. Some of them really bothered me, like Tropic of Cancer. But I left the event really thinking about banned and censored items.
If I go to library school, I'm going to have to think a lot more about the topic of Banned and Censored. Is it OK to ban or censor stuff just because you don't like it? When is it OK? Should the 8 year old sitting next to me have been there at all? And what did he think about the books? (He got very bored, very fast, and fell asleep on his Mom's lap pretty quickly.)

It was an uncomfortable night. I'm glad I went.

Uncensored Voices

Have I mentioned that I really like my Lit professor? I love reading and writing and debating, and my Lit class is all full of those things.

Next week is Banned Book Week. My Lit prof says I can get EXTRA CREDIT for attending the UNCENSORED VOICES program next Tuesday.

I think I'd have attended anyway - it looks like a good and edgy program!

Some of the speakers will be Charles Bock (who wrote Beautiful Children), Bob Brown, who publishes the Review-Journal, Andrew Kiraly, Editor of KNPR's Desert Companion, political columnist Steve Sebelius, Laura Henkel who owns the Sin City Gallery, and our very own Jeanne Goodrich, who is the Library's Executive Director.

They'll be doing readings and performances. I hope they'll also do some discussion!

Working in the library, I hear a lot about the freedom to read. Librarians are really passionate on the topic. The folks who will be on the panel look like they'll all be equally passionate, and I want to watch the sparks fly!

Besides, the Nevada Repertory Dance Theater is making a special appearance. I love them!

Couponing to save big bucks!

I only work part-time at the Library. That lets me have time to go to school. The bad part of that is I only get a part-time paycheck. I'm a growing lizard! I need groceries!

It's not like when I was living at home - Mom's not buying the groceries (and the shampoo, and the hand lotion...) What they say about kids in school eating only ramen noodles and mac & cheese is uncomfortably true, at least those last few days before payday...

I am SO going to the Couponing Class at the Sunrise Library on Saturday! When I called Lynn Tyrell to RSVP for the class, she told me her kids in school had reduced their weekly shopping check to $40.00!

She's going to teach us how to organize coupons so they're not all over, how to plan trips to the store, the different kinds of coupons, and lots more.

She says I don't even need to bring a notebook - she'll have a handout, and a website, and everything I need.

I *really* need to learn this so I'll have a little money left over before payday!

Finding a Job...

I am *so* lucky to have a job with the Library. There aren't a lot of jobs out there for five and half foot tall orange lizards.

Sadly, some of my friends are out of work. The places they worked have closed because of the economy, and they're really hurting. Their parents can help a little, but they really want to work.

I hate to say this, though... I don't know how some of my friends got jobs in the first place. I love 'em - they're great friends! But I'm not sure I'd hire them, the way they look!

The Spring Valley Library has a couple of workshops - one this Saturday, and the other next Saturday. I'm making my friends go.

This Saturday, Patricia Nelson and Nevada Job Connect will be there. They'll show everyone how to get registered with the Job Connect website, and how to find open jobs. They'll also talk about job hunting tips, and generally show my friends how to find jobs they can apply for.

Next Saturday, Ronald Thomas and Nevada Partners will be at the Spring Valley Library to help folks improve their chance of GETTING a job, once they've applied for a job. They'll talk about what to wear, how to make a resume, how to behave in the interview - all those things people forget once they've been out of the job market for a while!

Library eBooks for Kindle - the party continues!

I'm always surprised when supposedly mature people go all tiddly on me! Yesterday, Amazon and Overdrive released Library eBooks for Kindle. When I got to work yesterday afternoon, there was a huge party going on in the Virtual Library. It was eye-opening. There was singing.

I was a bit hesitant to come in this morning, not being sure what I'd find. It's not as bad as I thought. They're not spraying each other with seltzer water any more. But there's still lots of laughter, High Five-ing, and this complicated hip-bump maneuver that I don't think I want to know any more about.

Can you say giddiness? (Grownups can be Very Odd.)

I got some Amazon Gift Cards for Christmas, and I've ordered a Kindle for myself, and I'll let you know what I find! Until then, here's a You-Tube video that shows the process. It looks pretty easy! It's a little less than 4 minutes long, and easy to follow.

SCORE! What I learned...

Last Saturday I attended the SCORE program - What SCORE and SBA can do for you. It was VERY interesting, and a bit intimidating! I figured all I'd need to do to start a mobile DJ business was get some business cards printed up, and put something up on Craig's List. I was way wrong! And I'm ***so*** glad I found out!

Bob Cushman really knows his stuff, and laid it all out neatly.

SCORE helps new business people find out all the legal requirements. There are compliance codes, and he talked about how to set up the basics - like getting a phone line and the like!

I knew I'd need some money (equipment, a van, some Bling! DJ's need Bling!), and Bob talked about where to get funding. SBA has created programs that are funder-approved, which makes it a *lot* easier to locate funding!

Finally, most funding sources want you to have a completed Business Plan before they'll give you a loan. SCORE is uber-helpful on that topic! I didn't have a business plan, but now I know what I need to do, and I know that SCORE is there to help make sure my Business Plan is the best it can be!

When I'm not in school, or working at the Library, I love music, and I love my friends. I've often thought I might like to start a little Mobile DJ job that I could do in the evenings, when I don't have homework!

I've had a couple friends get into pretty bad trouble, starting their own Small Business. They didn't get any help, and ended up losing a gob of money. That's no good!

The best advice I've gotten is from a friend - she suggested I talk with SCORE and the SBA - that's the Service Corps of Retired Executives, and the Small Business Administration. SCORE helped my friend with her business plan, and really gave her a realistic picture of what running her own business would be like.

SBA helped with the money and organizing, and the legal stuff. SBA and SCORE are the bomb!

So I'm off to the West Charleston Library tomorrow at 1PM, to sit in on the SCORE / SBA Workshop. The folks from SCORE and SBA will be there to tell me what they can do to help me - and I hope I'll get some excellent contacts to help me start setting up my DJ Business!

So, help me! What should I name the business? Neon's Tunes? Neon the DL (Disk Lizard)? I need ideas!

Flash! The Short, Short Fiction Contest

Have you heard of Flash Fiction? Or Flash Short Stories?

The Vegas Valley Book Festival is sponsoring a Flash Short (VERY SHORT!) Story Contest this Saturday, September 10th, from 2:30 - 5:30, at the Clark County Library.

This is the second year for the contest. 20 writers have enrolled. On Saturday they'll get the topic, and 90 minutes only, to write a 500 word (max) story.

The winners get cash prizes, and their stories will be published in Las Vegas CityLife Magazine. AND, they get to do a reading at the Book Festival on November 5th!

Flash Fiction is a a relatively new form of writing. It was spawned by the Internet's need for quick, accessible reads.

Folks who enter these types of contests are writers who appreciate a challenge, and who really want to test themselves.

The four local judges are literary professionals - writers, editors, and reviewers. They'll get the completed stories. Just like an old Blue Book test, the entries will be anonymous.

And, just like a Blue Book test, some of the writers will finish early, and be relaxed. Others will howl in frustration when time is called.

Come on out to the Clark County Library this Saturday, and cheer on the contestants!

An intimate portrait of an artist trained in improvisation, captured at the most improvisational time of his career. It offers a window into the private writers' room and rehearsal halls.

Grey's Anatomy Season 7

Le Quattro Volte

Meek's Cutoff
