Card making in Laughlin

About a month ago, Karen D, down in Laughlin, mentioned a totally cool sounding program. Mindy is making holiday cards from scratch! I couldn't attend, but Karen sent me some great pics and a video. This looks so amazing! I can't trek to Laughlin mid-week while school's in session, but Karen promised that Mindy would keep me updated. Here's the info about the program:

Reference Assistant Mindy Munro has been offering card craft classes once per month for adults at the Laughlin Library since January, 2011. Each month, a differently themed card is created. In the past, “Thank You”, “Valentine’s Day”, and the “ 4th of July” have been inspirations. The classes last for 1.5 hours. Advance sign-up is encouraged in order to make sure that we have enough materials for all attendees. Class size is usually 10-12 adults.
As you can see from the video (below), the room is PACKED! So give them a call to reserve a space. Their number is 507-4060.

The next two classes are:
Tuesday, November 8
Tuesday December 6

Tuesday's New DVD Releases

Here are the DVD releases for next Tuesday, 1 November 2011:

The 2012 Anthology
Examines the many theories about the end of the world and looks for the possible truths behind the myths. It also reveals the many modern day methods of destruction and disaster theories from very real (nuclear arsenals) to controversial (global warming) to futuristic (nanotechnology, cyborgs, and robots).

A mysterious drifter and a young Japanese warrior arrive in a town that has been terrorized by outrageous and virulent criminals. Each is obsessed with his separate mission, and both will be guided by the wisdom of the Bartender at the Horseless Horseman Saloon. The two eventually join forces to bring down the corrupt and contemptuous reign of Nicola, the awesomely evil 'woodcutter' and his lady Alexandra, a femme fatale with a secret past.

Cars 2
Star racecar Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship on the road from Radiator Springs to exciting new places when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world's fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours, and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage!

Crazy Stupid Love
Fortysomething Cal Weaver is living the dream: good job, nice house, great kids, and marriage to his high school sweetheart. So when Cal learns that she has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his 'perfect' life quickly unravels. Cal, who hasn't dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth, so handsome player Jacob Palmer takes him on as wingman and protege.

The Great Explorers
Reveals the true stories behind some of history's most famous adventurers. Journey alongside Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, Magellan, Lewis & Clark, Stanley & Livingstone, and many, many more. Contains beautiful on-location photography, exciting re-enactments, making-of-featurettes, additional footage, and photo galleries. These are expeditions that viewers will never forget.

How the States Got their Shape - Season 1
Why don't people from New England pronounce their 'R's? How come some Pennsylvania Amish use cell phones? How did Northern Californians get so liberal? The clues are right on the map. Brian Unger hits the road, makes irreverent observations about how people think, speak, and act, and discovers their surprising connections to geography. With its crooked lines and odd breaks, the outline of America is a puzzle to be solved. Includes the acclaimed special that inspired the series.

Rulers of the Ancient World - Tyrants
Reveals the real story behind some of the greatest (and worst) rulers that ever lived. From Caesar's legacy to the destruction of Genghis Khan, take an in-depth and varied look at the many men who helped shape the future of the world, both for the better and worst. Contains 24 programs including the Ancients Behaving Badly; and Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Centuries ago, two 'sworn sisters' are isolated by their families, but stay connected through a secret language written in the folds of a white silk fan. Now, in modern-day Shanghai, their descendents must draw inspiration from the past as they struggle to maintain their own eternal bond in the face of life's complications. What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope and friendship.

In the late 1970s, Miss Wyoming Joyce McKinney became a tabloid staple when she kidnapped her former beau, a Mormon missionary, and tied him to a bed to 'deprogram' his religious beliefs - by having nonstop sex with him. Director Errol Morris follows the salacious adventures of this beauty queen with an IQ of 168, whose single-minded devotion to the man of her dreams led her across the globe, into jail, and onto the front page.

A husband and wife are kidnapped by extornionists and held for ransom. As the situation gets worse and the pressure gets higher, they begin to uncover a web of deceit and betrayal.

Water for Elephants
Against all odds, a veterinary student and a beautiful circus performer from a bygone era meet and fall in love through their shared compassion for a special elephant. But their secret romance incurs the wrath of her dangerously volatile husband.

WWE Hell in a Cell 2011
Its demonic structure can make a career-or end it. Some of the most iconic moments of the last decade have happened in Hell in a Cell-and now it's a WWE pay-per-view event! Great Pumpkin Gathering and Contest!

I ***ADORE*** Halloween! I've loved it since I was a little lizard, and I love it more now! I don't trick-or-treat so much any more, but my friends throw the most incredible Halloween parties!

One of the things I love most is carving pumpkins - so you can guess how excited I was when I saw this:

(click on the picture to see it bigger!)

Pumpkin Contest at the Windmill Library! Woo Hoo!I can enter up to FOUR pumpkins! (One in each category) - And there will be AWARDS!

I'm *SO* gonna bring in some Rocking Jack-o-Lanterns!

My buds at the library have made up a great list of Pumpkin Carving / Halloween Decorating books. (click on the book cover to see the whole list!)

I checked, and they really want you to do all your carving at home. Pumpkin guts make a terrific mess, and they're really bad for the books.

Bring in your carved pumpkins to the WINDMILL Library anytime between Tuesday October 25th, and Monday morning of Halloween. The judging will be in the afternoon.

And the best part is I don't have to take the pumpkin home to throw it away. The library is going to recycle all the pumpkins! Woo Hoo!

Marshmallow Towers

Erin at the Whitney Library has such GOOD ideas!

Don't tell anyone, but I have a sweet tooth, so this event was terrifically appealing to me!

Erin and The Gang made Marshmallow Towers last week! It was amazing!

The rules were we had to construct an amazing tower using only marshmallows, toothpicks, and our imagination.

Sometimes we had to taste -er, TEST the construction materials to be sure they were of the best quality!

Jonathan, Angel, Freddy, Chalyn, Clarissa and the rest of the gang made incredibly detailed towers. The towers all went home to be admired! (And probably to give their lives to upcoming mugs of hot chocolate!)

Erin has a couple more great events coming up - Movie Poster Mania is gonna happen on 10/22. We're going to create movie posters for teen books that SHOULD be made into movies.

And on November 12, we're going to do Project Runway. No, no sewing involved! We're going to create great wardrobes for dolls, using Duct Tape, Aluminum Foil, and other unusual materials.

I hope to see you there!

Now, if you'll excuse me, there's a mug of hot chocolate calling me!

Zappos - WOW!

Have you ever heard of Zappos?

Look down at your feet. Wearing shoes? Yeah, THAT Zappos!

Did you know Zappos' headquarters is HERE? In the Las Vegas Valley?

Tomorrow night, Wednesday 10/12/2011, Zappos' "Speaker of the House*", Jamie Naughton, is going to be at the new Windmill Library, talking about the WOW that is Zappos!

Everything I've heard about Zappos is that they're weird and wonderful. Check out this video:

I *so* want to work there! I wonder if they'll need a Librarian in a few years?

Jamie's going to talk about how they manage both amazing customer service, AND making Zappos a great place to work! I love it when they say that at Zappos, "...happiness becomes the bottom line."

I'm gonna be there! This just sounds amazing!

Fast Forward Vegas
Zappos: What makes you happy?
Windmill Library
7060 W. Windmill Lane
Las Vegas, NV 89113
Wednesday, October 12, 2011
6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.

Here's a longer piece about Zappos - It's from Nightline a few years ago. Totally WOW!

* As near as I can tell, "Speaker of the House" means she's the Squeaky Wheel who keeps things moving. Here's part of her job description:

"Jamie works directly with CEO Tony Hsieh, focusing on the culture for which the company has become known. Her role is essential in creating and driving the architecture of the dynamic culture as well as focusing on culture R&D to ensure always stays relevant to both the employees and their customers."

I think that's a fancy way of saying she doesn't let anyone get away with nuthin' bad!

Red State
Three teenage boys are lured to the town of Cooper's Dell with the promise of a party. A chance encounter in Berlin sparks an improbable, passionate affair between an Israeli man and a Palestinian woman in this critically acclaimed, bittersweet drama. All Hallow's Read

My very favorite author of all time, Neil Gaiman, made a Modest Proposal last year:

For Halloween, give scary books!

Not instead of candy - that could get dangerous. But in addition to.

Perhaps not to every child, and perhaps not for the Parade 'o Costumes.

But on Halloween, share a scary story. He's calling it All Hallow's Read.

Sounds great to me!

I'm going to rustle up some of my favorite stories and get ready to share!

Here are some great Scary Stories for Grownups.

The folks in the Virtual Library are getting together lists of scary stories for teens, kids and little kids too. I'll link to them when I have them!

Oh, and watch the Library's Facebook page - We'll be having selections from the Horror Survival Guide - and a creepy book of the day!

And, how about writing some scary stories? Go to the library's Facebook page and click "Scary Stories" in the left side of the page. You can write your own Scary Story - and read mine! It explains why I don't ride my bike any more...

History Detectives - Season 9
America's top gumshoes are back with a full season's worth of proving once again that an object found in an attic or backyard might be anything but ordinary. Wesley Cowan, Gwendolyn Wright, Elyse Luray, Dr. Eduardo Pagan, and Tukufu Zuberi leave no stone unturned as they travel around the country to explore the stories behind local folklore, prominent figures and family legends.

Horrible Bosses
For Nick, Kurt, and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few too many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers, permanently. There's only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

The Trip
When Steve Coogan is asked by The Observer to tour the country's finest restaurants, he envisions it as the perfect getaway with his beautiful girlfriend. But when she backs out on him, he has no one to accompany him but his best friend and source of eternal aggravation, Rob Brydon.

WWE Ladder Match 2 - Crash & Burn
It's the veritable definition of 'high risk, high reward' in sports entertainment, and a rich reward hangs high above the ring and a superstar must climb a ladder to win the match and retrieve the prize. But the falls from the ladders can be devastating and the punishment one can inflict when using the cold steel ladders as weapons can be brutal. The animals at the Franklin Park Zoo love their kindhearted caretaker, Griffin Keyes. To keep Griffin from leaving, they decide to teach him the rules of courtship, animal style.
