Carla & Jaime's Teen Picks

Carla and Jaime, out at the Summerlin Library, are wired into the best Teen books! You want to know what's hot? Or just what you want to read next? They're the ones! Each month, Carla and Jaime suggest three wonderful books for teens.

Here are Carla and Jaime's picks for the month:

Heir Apparent
Vivian Vande Veld

Giannine is trapped in the dangerous game of Heir Apparent. In Heir Apparent there are as many ways to win as there are to get killed. Giannine can testify to how many ways there are to die--it's about all she's been able to do since she started playing.

Now all she has to do is get the magic ring, find the stolen treasure, answer the dwarf's dumb riddles, come up with a poem for the head-chopping statue, cope with the army of ghosts, outmaneuver her half brothers, and defeat the man-eating dragon.

If she can do all of that, why, she just might save her own life!

If I Stay
Gayle Forman

In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck...

A sophisticated, layered, and heartachingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make - and the ultimate choice Mia commands.

Catherine Called Birdie
Karen Cushman

12th day of September (1290): "I am commanded to write an account of my days: I am bit by fleas and plagued by family. That is all there is to say."

Fourteen-year-old Catherine has struck a deal: she can forego spinning, a task she loathes, if she agrees to keep a diary of her daily life. Catherine's chronicle of her life as lady-of-the-manor-in-training (a position she has no desire to fulfill) is witty, acerbic and altogether delightful.

Over the course of a year, Catherine writes about events ranging from the number of fleas she's had to pick off herself (29 one day) to arrangements being made for her pending marriage to the man she calls "Shaggy Beard" - a marriage Catherine - independent of mind and spirit - does not wish to make.

Here are Becky's picks for the month:

When You Dare
Lori Foster

Professional mercenary Dare Macintosh lives by one hard and fast rule: business should never be personal. If a cause appeals to him and the price is right, he'll take the mission he's offered. But then the lovely Molly Alexander asks him to help her track down the men who'd had her kidnapped—and for the first time, Dare's tempted to combine work with pleasure.

Fiercely independent, Molly vows to trust no one until she's uncovered the truth. Could the enemy be her powerful estranged father? The ex-fiancĂ© who still holds a grudge? Or the not-so-shy fan of her bestselling novels? As the danger heats up around them, the only anchor Molly has is Dare himself. But what she feels for him just might be the most frightening thing of all….

Deadly Illusions
Brenday Joyce

Irrepressible heiress and intrepid sleuth Francesca Cahill moves from her own glittering world of Fifth Avenue to the teeming underbelly of society, a place of pride, passions…and sometimes deadly perversion.

Despite the misgivings of her fiancé, Calder Hart, Francesca cannot turn away from a threat that is terrorizing the tenement neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. A madman has attacked three women, but while the first two victims survived, the third is found dead. All the victims are impoverished but beautiful Irishwomen - andFrancesca fears that her dear friends Maggie Kennedy and Gwen O'Neil could be next.

Soon she is working with her former love, police commissioner Rick Bragg - Calder's half brother and worst rival. But even as Calder's jealous passions leave his relationship with Francesca teetering on the brink, Francesca is frantically on the killer's trail, certain the Slasher will strike again, afraid she will be too late...

I shall not want
Julia Spencer-Fleming

People die. Marriages fail. In the small Adirondack town of Millers Kill, New York, however, life doesn’t stop for heartbreak. A brand-new officer in the police department, a breaking-and-entering, and trouble within his own family keep Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne busy enough to ignore the pain of losing his wife - and the woman he loves.

At St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, the Reverend Clare Fergusson is trying to keep her vestry, her bishop, and her National Guard superiors happy - all the while denying her own wounded soul.

When a Mexican farmhand stumbles over a Latino man killed with a single shot to the back of his head, Clare is sucked into the investigation through her involvement in the migrant community. The discovery of two more bodies executed in the same way ignites fears that a serial killer is loose in the close-knit community. While the sorrowful spring turns into a scorching summer, Russ is plagued by media hysteria, conflict within his department, and a series of baffling assaults.

As the violence strikes closer and closer to home, an untried officer is tested, a wary migrant worker is tempted, and two would-be lovers who thought they had lost everything must find a way to trust each other again - before it becomes forever, fatally, too late.

Book Review: The 6 Reasons You'll Get the Job

The 6 Reasons You'll Get the Job: What Employers Look for--Whether They Know It or Not
Debra Angel MacDougall

How hard can it be to get a job?

Well, obviously it can be very difficult. Yet most of us, myself included, tend to think that the job hunting techniques are pretty obvious, what any high schooler could know. I always assumed you look for job openings - in the newspaper classifieds, online, or even at job placement centers. Then you send in your resume. According to the authors, 80% of job openings never, ever show up in these places. 80%! During hard economic times an even lower percentage of job openings may be advertised.

How can this be? Well, studies have been done comparing the number of people finding jobs with the number of advertised openings, and on average, the advertised openings only account for 20% of the jobs filled. The problem is that most of us - 80% again - are competing for the 20% of jobs that are advertised.

The authors give a variety of techniques for tapping into the 80% of jobs in "The Hidden Job Market", similar to what Dick Bolles describes in What Color is Your Parachute? First, identitify places you would like to work, even if there are no advertised job openings. Then contact the manager who will make the hiring decision directly.

Whether you go in person, call, or write, you want to list what you believe to be your top 3 qualities that will benefit this particular manager. Then ask if the manager could use someone with your qualifications. Under no circumstances do you include your resume at this point or tell them that you are looking for a job! This would get you sent to HR or worse, simply ignored. Your goal at this point is simply to get the manager's attention.

It took me well over half of the book to begin to believe that this might work.

Oh, and The 6 Reasons You'll Get the Job:

  • Presentation

  • Ability

  • Dependability

  • Motivation

  • Attitude

  • Network
Don't let these intimidate you. The issue isn't that you need to match some perfect ideal in all of these areas, but that you be aware that different businesses will be seeking different styles within each area. For example, presentation will mean very different things if you want to work in a skate shop compared with a 3 star restaurant.

Also, the authors note that very rarely is it ability that will get you hired. Everyone who makes the final cut in the screening process will have the raw ability to do the job. It is usually the other reasons that will make you stand out.
