Valentine's Day on a Budget

Are you worried about how you can have a Happy Valentine's Day during this recession? Roses, chocolates and dinner are traditional things that we have come to expect, but many people are looking for alternative ways to enjoy this wonderful day. Hand made gifts have become very popular during this time. That is one way to save money. You can also cook dinner for your loved ones at home this year, which will also save money. Finally, attending a program at the library will allow you to save money on entertainment.

What are some things you can do to celebrate this "lovely" day? Here are three things that we think you may enjoy;

1. Create Valentine crafts with your family or your friends. We have an excellent electronic resource that will help you select crafts that are easy and fun to make. Make sure you are a resident of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, with a valid library card number and PIN. Do you meet all these criteria? If so, you can access this electronic resource from home. If not, you will have to visit one of our libraries to access it. Now let’s get started. After April 1, 2010 this electronic resource will no longer be available, so make sure you use it as much as possible before that date.

To get ideas, follow these simple steps
1. Go to our homepage, lvccld.org
2. Click on “Databases A-Z”
3. Click on “Hobbies and Crafts”
4. Click on the highlighted section, “Seasonal and Holiday” for Valentine crafts

There is so much to choose from. We hope you find just what you need to make this day special for yourself or someone else.

2. Attend a library program in celebration of Valentine's Day. What are your plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day? No plans? Check out the events we have planned for this special occasion. Here is one of the events we are sure you will enjoy.

Event - Valentine Scrapbooking Workshop
Location - Enterprise Library
Date – February 13th, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Come and join us for a free scrapbooking workshop hosted by Ms. Lori. Advice and instructions will be available for all skill levels. 3. Cook dinner at home. This is a great way to celebrate this occasion. You can learn a new recipe or make something traditional with a twist. We have lots of cook books in our collection that will help you make a fantastic dinner for two or many.

To find cooking books, follow these simple steps;
1. Go to our homepage, lvccld.org
2. Click on "Library Catalog"
3. In the search box, enter "Cookery"
4. Select the "Subject" circle and then click "Go"
5. This will give you a list of cooking books, just click on a category to choose from

There are hundreds of books to choose from, so we are sure you will find something to interest you. If you want a specific type of cooking, like Asian or Seafood, just enter the term before cookery to limit the results.

We hope you find these ideas to be worthwhile and we would love any comments you have.
