"Sicko," The Movie by Michael Moore

Ttitle: Sicko
Genre: Documentary

With everything going on with issues in health care reform, have you ever thought how other countries handle health care? We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet many of our citizens cannot afford health care or are not covered for other reasons, such as having a preexisting medical condition. Is this fair? After watching the movie “Sicko” by Michael Moore, I was in total disbelief.

Let me just start by saying that saying that after I watched the movie, my initial impression is that healthcare is all about money, not the physical well being of humans. That in itself is a disgrace. How can you place a dollar amount on human life?

Foreign Prisoners held captive in Guantanamo Bay receive better health care than volunteers of the 9/11 bombing in New York. These people volunteered their services to help others, now they are in the fight for their own lives. How ironic is that.

Another part of the movie that still haunts me to this day is the story of the African-American woman who took her child to the nearest emergency room, only to be told she had to take her to another hospital, because her insurance did not cover her in that particular hospital. What the heck? As a result the child died. How inhumane is that?

There are many more stories like this. So if you have health insurance, are you really covered? I would hate to find out that I am not. There are lots of people who are against healthcare reform, but I wonder if they will change their minds after watching this movie.

Have you watched the movie? If so, we would love to hear your thoughts. Although this movie is over two years old, the content is very relevant, so we would also love to hear how you feel about healthcare reform.
