Authors' April Birthdays Celebrated at Centennial Hills

What do best-selling authors Tom Clancy, Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich and Scott Turow all have in common? In addition to all being hugely successful mystery and suspense writers, each also celebrates a birthday in the month of April!

The works of these four authors were highlighted at the April meeting of the Centennial Hills Readers’ Circle, a new book club for adults at the Centennial Hills Library. Participants were asked to select and read a book by one of these authors and then share thoughts about the book at the monthly meeting, which is held the first Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m.

Each author offers his own unique twist on mystery and suspense writing. Tom Clancy (born April 12, 1947) has gone from working as an obscure Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history to becoming one of the best-selling authors in the United States, known for popularizing the genre of “techno-thrillers,” political intrigues mixed with details of modern military technology. Try The Hunt for Red October, his first novel or Clear and Present Danger, which sold more copies than any other novel published in the 1980’s, for a taste of “non-put-downable” intricate plotting and razor-sharp suspense.

Sue Grafton (born April 24, 1940) has seen her work published in 28 countries and 26 languages. She is best known for her chronological series of mystery novels written from the perspective of spunky female investigator Kinsey Milhone. Start with A is for Alibi and work your way through the alphabet for hours of fast-paced crime-solving enjoyment.

Janet Evanovich (born April 22, 1943) claims, “What I really write is adventure stories- Indiana Jones in Trenton.” Her Stephanie Plum series is numbered rather than alphabetical, combining a delightful mix of characters and situations around the dangers of detective work and bounty hunting. Begin with One for the Money and count your way up through Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, which will go on sale June 23. Check out Evanovich’s website for her monthly contest (Win a Plum Crazy hat!) and pics of her new pet puppy Ollie.

Scott Turow (born April 12, 1949) has been heralded as the “Bard of the Litigious Age.” A writer and attorney, he has penned seven spellbinding legal thrillers. His literary crime classic Presumed Innocent is widely hailed as a standard in courtroom thriller excellence.

Our Centennial Hills Readers’ Circle favorite? That would be Janet Evanovich, whose characters are quirky and fun, with lots of mystery and plenty of old-fashioned detective work added to the mix for good measure.
